Judges’ Special Merit Award 2015

The winner for 2015 was:

TRL, Highways England and the Road Workers’ Safety Forum
Eliminating road worker risks from crossing live carriageways

Applied research showed there was no change in road user risk behaviour when OSSR was used compared to traditional practices. The impact of this change on road worker risk is considerable, eliminating carriageway crossings at relaxation schemes on high speed roads and reducing road worker injury risk by 24 – 28%.

Judges’ comment:

This initiative has changed the way we view traffic management on motorways.
