The Major Project Award 2015 will be awarded to the team responsible for the successful delivery of a major project – i.e. bridge construction, highway widening, by-pass or junction improvements, establishment of a control centre or similar, taking into consideration time, costs, environmental impact, stakeholder involvement, feedback and user satisfaction. The project value needs to be above £5 million and should have started two years prior to entering the awards.

  • What innovative measures were taken to achieve a particular goal or aim?
  • Describe the range of challenges identified and techniques used to overcome them.
  • What is the quality and impact of the project on stakeholders, and contribution to the wider community and travelling public?
  • Explain the overall environmental impact.

Last year’s winner

Costain Carillion JV on behalf of the Highways Agency
M1 Junc 10-13 Improvement Scheme

The project was a Managed Motorway with the technology to allow the hard shoulder to operate as a running lane during busier periods. This increased capacity ensures more reliable journey times for local residents and both local and national businesses.

Judges’ comment:

Construction was undertaken on an extremely busy highway in limited space using innovative methods and with good stakeholder liaison.
